Banning Sulfites

Sulfites are used to control bacteria and to prevent discoloration from oxidation in some fresh vegetables and fruit. But sulfites can be deadly to those suffering from allergies, particularly for those with asthma. About 5% of the nation's 10 million to 16 million asthma patients are sensitive to sulfites. On this date in 1985, the Food and Drug Administration banned some sulfite preservatives after at least 12 deaths had been linked to them. The agency also checked into more than 500 reports of adverse reactions, from diarrhea to unconsciousness and shock.
